Sands of time

Last week, over a cup of tea with a couple of friends, we were sharing about where we are at in our individual lives.

And as we stood there in retrospect to all that had happened and was currently happening, one of us reflectively said, “You know, life happens in seasons…” as he continued to rub his cup of tea.

He paused and so did we. Not because we were oblivious of the existence of seasons, but because we longed to hear the story behind this captivating statement that seemed to offer a new perspective.

As he looked back, life seemed to be going well in every aspect of his life 2–3 years ago. He seemed to be progressing each day in his career and was excited as he looked forward to what the future held.

Fast forward to where we were standing, each one taking their cup of tea when he made that statement. Life was not bad. Not at all. But something had changed. What could have changed in 3 years?

A lot. Right? I thought so too.

3 years ago, he had envisioned life to head a certain direction which it wasn’t. But he understood and appreciated the concept of times and seasons.

This conversation stayed with me. I started to think a lot about that statement…maybe the word itself more than the statement — Seasons! What a word! What a concept!

I started to think about the plans we have that are never attained, the promises we make that are never fulfilled and the dreams we have, that are sometimes shattered.

And as time goes by, seasons change, circumstances change, people grow and priorities shift. Everything in life is altered by the sands of time. So nothing ever really lasts.

The more I thought about it, I was entangled in this chain of endless questions. Why? When? Where? And then back to Why?

So this is why I write. There are different stories engraved within the voices that sprout in the many seasons of our lives.

And as much as I like to tell stories, it is a way for me to process the season, the change, the altering, the breaking and the making.

Seasons are an opportunity for me to explore the beauty on the other side of the shore. A time to embrace change and learn from it as I hold on to conversations with others experiencing the same.

Writing is also the perfect distraction. Hoping that maybe, as I write and words ooze out through the tips of my fingers, I will be able to write through past this season, into the next.

Seasons come but they also go. I hope that in whatever season you are in, you are aware of the change happening and living out your purpose nevertheless.
